Levodopa GlossaryAdrenal gland – one of two endocrine glands located near the kidneys that produce hormones and epinephrine. Carbidopa – a drug given in combination with levodopa in order to treat Parkinson’s disease symptoms. Carbidopa reduces the side effects associated with prolonged levodopa use. Dopamine – a neurotransmitter that is essential for muscle control. Dopamine agonists – Parkinson’s disease drugs that mimic dopamine inside the brain. Dyskinesia – impaired ability to control movement. Dyskinesia is a common side effect of prolonged levodopa use. Levodopa – a prescription drug used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Manganese – a metal that occurs naturally in rock. It is used in the manufacture of steel. Manganese poisoning – a disease caused by over-exposure to manganese. People who work in the steel, mining, railroad, or welding industries are at the highest risk of manganese poisoning. Manganism – see “manganese poisoning.” Parkinson’s disease – a neurological disease that affects muscle control and is characterized by tremors, lack of coordination, and difficulty walking. Sinemet – a prescription drug that is a combination of levodopa and carbidopa. Sinemet is used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. |
